What Is the Non-Lucrative Visa?
Spain’s Non-Lucrative Visa (Visado de Residencia No Lucrativa) is a residency permit that allows non-EU citizens to live in Spain for one year, renewable for two-year periods (long-term residence after five years), as long as they don’t work for a Spanish employer. It’s commonly called Spain’s “retirement visa” because it’s the most popular route for retirees, though it’s available to anyone with sufficient passive income or savings.
Unlike the Digital Nomad Visa, the NLV does not allow any form of work — including remote work for foreign clients or employers. If you need to work remotely while living in Spain, the Digital Nomad Visa is the legal route. The NLV does, however, allow you to live legally in Spain, access the healthcare system, travel freely throughout the Schengen Area, and eventually apply for long-term residency and Spanish citizenship.
After 5 years of continuous legal residence you can apply for long-term (permanent) residency. Spanish citizenship is available after 10 years for most nationalities — reduced to 2 years for citizens of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, and Sephardic Jews of Spanish origin. The 10-year route generally requires renouncing your prior nationality (with exceptions for the groups listed above).

What is the Non-Lucrative Visa for Spain?
The Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) is a Spanish residence visa for non-EU citizens who want to live in Spain without working. It’s the most popular visa for retirees, people with passive income, and those who want to live in Spain full-time without employment. The visa is initially granted for one year and can be renewed for two additional 2-year periods, leading to permanent residency after five years.
How much money do I need for the Non-Lucrative Visa?
For 2026, the main applicant needs to prove €28,800 per year in passive income (400% of IPREM). Each additional dependent requires an extra €7,200 per year, so a couple needs €36,000 a year and a family of four €50,400. The income must be passive — pensions, investments, rental income, savings — not from employment.
Can I work on the Non-Lucrative Visa?
No. The NLV prohibits any form of work — employed, self-employed, freelance or remote, including work for companies outside Spain. If you want to work remotely from Spain, you need the Digital Nomad Visa instead.
How long does the NLV application process take?
From start to finish, expect 3–6 months. Document preparation takes 4–8 weeks, the consulate appointment may have a wait of several weeks, and processing takes 1–3 months after submission.
Do I need to speak Spanish?
No. There is no Spanish language requirement for the NLV application or for long-term residence after 5 years. Spanish language (DELE A2) and cultural knowledge (CCSE) exams are required only for Spanish citizenship.
